Connor Swan, MSW LCSW

Licensed Clinical Social Worker

My name is Connor, and I’ve worked with teenagers and young adults (ages 14+) transitioning from childhood to adulthood for the past 5 years. Drawing on experiences across three counties in child welfare, a youth shelter, and the school district allows me to connect with those navigating these systems and collaborate on solutions and coping skills. I find it’s important to be a solid team with the client to address issues such as struggles at home; troubles at school or with friends; anxiety about the past, present, or future; behavioral issues; and learning about the self and their identity. As a queer woman myself, I understand the significance of a safe space to explore without judgement, and that is what I pride myself on creating and maintaining. As a licensed clinical social worker, I use cognitive and dialectical behavioral therapies, somatic and acceptance & commitment therapies, and I take elements from additional methods because I believe there are benefits in each modality that prove useful in treatment. I use a client-centered approach because the client is the best expert on their own experiences.

My technique for talk therapy is akin to a brainstorming session, aiming to reduce tension wherever possible. We have a topic to tackle; let’s bounce a few ideas around, address the here and now, and then step our way into the heart of the issue, building up skills along the way. Humor, collaboration, psychoeducation, and evidence-based practices are transparently used throughout sessions, and “homework” is often assigned by the client, i.e., what they feel they can achieve between sessions. When life is overwhelming, even simple tasks can feel mountainous, and that’s where my style of therapy can help empower the client and help them realize what they are capable of.
